Nu al heibel over 37e America's Cup

Eén van de geruchten die de kop opstaken in het Nieuw Zeelandse Auckland is bij de Amerikanen van de New York Yacht Club in het verkeerde keelgat geschoten. Word on the street is dat INEOS Team UK bij de uitdaging van Emirates Team New Zealand hebben afgesproken dat ze gewoon met zijn tweeën gaan racen en helemaal geen andere uitdagers gaan toelaten.

Het gerucht in de Nieuw Zeeuwse hoofdstad is dat de twee teams volgend jaar al een race om de cup kunnen doen bij het Isle of Wright. Deze Deed of Gift-match is dan een one-off en staat ook niet open voor anderen zoals Luna Rossa of American Magic.

Volgens Commodore Christopher J Culver van de New York Yacht Club zou dat echt een stap in de verkeerde richting zijn. In 1988 en 2010 gebeurde ook zo'n wedstrijdje tussen de vorige winnaar een een uitdager, maar dat was niet bevorderlijk voor de sport. De New Zealand Herald citeert Culver: "Regardless of the conditions, the New York Yacht Club will not support a Deed of Gift match or an America's Cup competition that, due to the schedule and rules for competition, is effectively open to only the defender and Challenger of Record. The AC75 is a remarkable boat that will only produce closer and more exciting competition in future cycles. As the world emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be a thirst for the fusion of competition, tradition and social interaction that the America's Cup can provide like no other sporting event."

Culver gaat nog verder en haalt aan dat juist het blijven bij dezelfde boot nu de deuren opent voor meer uitdagers en dat maakt de sport juist beter: "With the right schedule and match conditions, there is every expectation we would see a competition to rival Perth in 1987, Auckland in 2003 and Valencia in 2007. Each of those America's Cup cycles drew 10 or more teams to compete for the Auld Mug and the significant commercial interest necessary to support such a grand event. To waste this confluence of opportunity on a two-team event, to potentially once again plunge the competition into the New York State Courts, is not in the best interests of the America's Cup or the sport of sailing."
